Pagan books and movies...more offbeat recommends

I don't go in for the new-agey books or movies....to me, Lord of the Rings doesn't count as a Pagan movie just because it's a fantasy. A Pagan book/movie needs to get to the heart of the matter, the really earth and mud between toes of being Pagan or dealing with Pagan themes. Here are some of my recommendations:

Books -
"The Fifth Sacred Thing" by Starhawk
"Gossamer Axe" by Gael Baudino
"Temple of My Familiar" by Alice Walker (and nearly every one of her books or poetry collections)
"Bless Me, Ultima" by ...can't remember the author
"Legacy of Luna" by Juila Butterfly Hill
"Strange Days: My Life and Times with Jim Morrison" by Patricia Keneally Morrison
"The Telling" by Ursula K. LeGuin
"Practical Magic" by Alice Hoffman
"American Gods" by Neil Gaiman
"The Sandman Series" by Neil Gaiman
The poetry of Walt Whitman, Keats, and Maya Angelou

Movies -
"Practical Magic"
"Drawing Down the Moon"
The "Goddess Remembered" Series by Donna Read and the Film Board of Canada
"Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love"
"The Doors" - there is a scene of Jim Morrison getting married in an actual Witchcraft ceremony, conducted by his widow, Patricia Keneally.
"Into the Woods" - Stephen Sondheim's lyrics at one point state "Witches can be right, giants can be good" and the Witch is the voice of reason in this world of fairytales growing up.

Happy reading/viewing! Blessings

ABSTRACT
The Academy of Scientific Astrology is based on astronomic principles confirming to the IAU convention. The calculations are performed on the HORIZONS integrator by Jon Giorgini of NASA JPL, Pasadena CA.
Subject headings: solar system – Academic Zodiac, astrology – precession of the ascendant, meridian constellations

1. INTRODUCTION

Over the years the Academic Zodiac has been published, tested and tried in a variety of situations ranging from Eros landing to the discovery of the WMAP cold spot. It is our intent and duty to give credit while referring to the NASA JPL staff that guided our first steps into the fascinating world that we call universe. Our mission was not only to delineate all the dwarf planets, centaur objects and classes of special objects, but also study the universal horoscope much as the ancients would. Surprisingly, we have everything that is needed for such a study; in a word, we have NASA.

2. OBSERVATIONS

The ancients observed the skies. This matter of fact marks the difference between the ancient and modern. The visionary astronomers saw the exact positions of the stars according to precession as well as other energetic changes in the finer strata. Anyone observing the sky will determine the rising constellations. These change according to epoch and precession. The ascendant set is by no means static. Observation discloses the true nature of the skies: they rotate. As the skies rotate, the set of ascendants is changing. As the set of ascendants is changing, so does the pulse of this little planet, e.g. today we have a small set of ascendants, only 16, accounting for the uniform state of planetary culture.

3. DATA REDUCTION

The Academic Zodiac has been studied and published as based on scientific facts. The introductory study includes the precession of the ascendant, as well a special treatise on the meridian constellations.
The definition under 1) implies that there is a difference between eastern and meridian constellations, much as the local zodiac stands apart as separate system.
The same rules do not apply to ascendants and zodiacal constellations, much as a separate study of the meridian constellations is required in an astrologer.
The astrologer operating within the real sky environment learns to reduce the data to the essential: ascendant, Moon, star gates, WMAP cold spot and major conjunctions.
Data can be extracted by planetocentric analysis, e.g. In a Juno-centric marriage horoscope, Venus conjunct Bellatrix conveys data that were not obtainable by geocentric analysis.
4. MODEL

The Academic Zodiac spawns further models.

The Academic Zodiac with its standard 22 IAU constellations stands apart fro the set of eastern ascendants, whose number is 16.
The Cartesian house system regulates the uniform of stellar information in a given situation, whether during a seaquake (topocentric depression, negative altitude), on spacecraft or alien solar system. The board mainframe already incorporates such a system.
Scanning the local zodiac for travel purpose is executed by a basic program with preprogrammed zodiacs as well as input and correction capabilities. Zodiacs will be determined on the flight.

5. DISCUSSION

It would be beyond our expectations to find a primitive society handling the intricacies of precession and the zodiac. Slaves and primitives are expected to do as they are told, think as it is expected from their primitive culture, and most of all think big of their culture and leaders. The culture one is born into is the greatest of all times, for all practical purposes. One will not question since the experts do their job and one is not to interfere. It is clear that the Indian, Hebrew and Chinese civilizations are in turn the greatest of all. With due respect towards your civilization, mine is slightly greater than yours is.

6. SUMMARY

Neglect and occult reason have reduced the zodiac to speculative game for the masses. Asinine presumptions have Spica Virginis in Libra and soon Scorpius.
People born with Sun in Virgo are already being told that they are “Scorpio”. Soon the error will expand towards 90 degrees without anyone noticing.
Ascendant Pisces is being interpreted as Capricorn, even when Capricornus can not rise at due east for the epoch.
The Sun is in Libra for Sai Baba’s birthday, November 23rd.
Scores of people believe in the most improbable ascendants and zodiacal positions, such as Aries ascending or even “Pluto in Aries”. Apart from being ridiculous, such presumptions are dangerous in many ways. Pluto never enters Aries or Pisces, much as Eris will never enter Taurus at all. The people who handled the zodiac and ascendant set during the years were poorly educated to say the least. There may be even belief in 12 or 13 signs in the academic world, such is the pressure of the unconscious media upon modern daily mind.

YOUR TRUE LIFE MAGICK – NOT FROM A JEDI

They lied to you. They framed you within their hilarious system made of 12 signs that fits their infantile mind prone to domination. But they can dominate only the feeble, the undeveloped and those with no true mind1 at all. For 300 years Europe has been in the darkness as ruled by zodiacal idiots from Nostradamus to Kepler. Even Hipparchus failed to establish the precession of the ascendants. Where do you get your true natal sky? Not from a Jedi. http://www.lulu.com/content/1000623

RTRRT – NOT FROM A JEDI

Instant magick has become a way of life as nowadays everyone can produce instant miracles right upon downloading the RTRRT suite of magick weapons for the initiate. The real time reality rendering tools do not Cesarean conflict with religion, on the contrary, the little powerful techniques boos true faith. Yet instant magick is not available from the Jedi order, or any order whatsoever. True initiation has one master only2. http://www.lulu.com/content/1098422 Not from a Jedi.

ACADEMIC ZODIAC – NOT FROM A JEDI

The Academic Zodiac is a safe environment for astrological experimentation, whether initiated in Egyptian or Mayan mysteries. The 22 IAU constellations of the zodiac represent the official astronomic positions of the planets. Sai Baba uses the Academic Zodiac as avatar of truth. His natal Sun is in Libra according to NASA ephemeris on November 23rd. August 4th 2004. Darth Alice was born with Moon in Cetus ascending, Mercury in Sextans, Venus in Orion, Juno in Scutum3 and Pluto in Serpens Cauda4. Where did she get her true natal horoscope? http://youtube.com/AcademicZodiac Not from a Jedi. http://www.lulu.com/content/956267

PRECESSED ASCENDANT – NOT FROM A JEDI

They lied to you. You have not been born with a “Scorpio”ascendant since Scorpius is presently not rising at due east. That alleged “Capricorn” ascendant is Pisces. There is more than “two signs: of error in their sick miscalculations. And they say they precessed one sign only. That is a lie. The error is not one but two signs. There are 16 ascendants5 rising at east, as inspected by due observation. The local zodiac has nothing to do with the precession of the ascendant, much as the ascendant has nothing to do with the meridian constellation. Where do you get your true ascendant? http://www.lulu.com/content/1850366 Not from a Jedi.

Hello,

Yule and new year Greetings.

I've just joined your tribe, its nice linking up with others interested
in pagan books.

below is details of my latest work.

Being new to list I've enclosed a short intro too.

BB
Nabarz

---------------------------------------------------------

Divine Comedy of Neophyte Corax and Goddess Morrigan.

A dialectic play now available at:

http://www.lulu.com/content/1728442

In this short collection of dialectic plays, Payam Nabarz uses the
Greek teaching method of `Socratic Dialogue' or the Irish Druids
`Colloquy' to take a down–to-earth look at contemporary spirituality.
In an easy to read and no-nonsense fashion he explores multi-faceted
mystical paths with references to popular cultural icons, making this
an accessible read for all seekers.

This is a divine comedy that both enlightens you and has you rolling
on floor with laughter. If you enjoy the works of Terry Pratchett,
The Mighty Boosh or Mulla Nasreddin, this dialectic play will be an
enjoyable addition to your collection. This is the tale of the magical
journeys and adventures of a neophyte called Corax, and his initiator
the Goddess Morrigan. The Celtic Goddess Morrigan is the Goddess of
war, death, rebirth, change and justice - this is far more than Corax
expected at his initiation!

Content:
Act I: Lammas.
Act II: The Autumnal Equinox.
Act III: Samhain.
Act IV: The Winter Solstice- Alban Arthan: the birth of the sun.
Act V: A Kali Puja: a magickal workshop.
Act VI: Imbolc.
Act VII: The Dance of Death.
Act VIII: Beltane 4play.
Act IX: An eclectic pagan's near-death experience.
Act X: Beltane.
Act XI: Justice for Rollright Stones.
Act XII: Living like the pagan ancestors.
Act XIII: The Towers of Silence.
Act XIV: The Magi's gifts.

Review comments: Creative Genius… Brilliant… Hilarious…

Divine Comedy of Neophyte Corax and Goddess Morrigan is available from:
I hope you enjoy reading it!

Nabarz's writings have appeared in numerous esoteric magazines
including Touchstone (the journal of the Order of Bards Ovates and
Druids), Pagan Dawn (the journal of the Pagan Federation), Stone
(Twin Serpents, 2006). He is the editor of the `Mithras Reader: an
academic and religious journal of Greek, Roman and Persian Studies'
(Twin Serpents, 2006).

Regards,

Myrtle of Willendorf

I came across this book when I was searching for books with Pagan elements. It's in the young adult section of the library and only takes a couple of hours to read. The following is a review from amazon.com. I just copied and pasted it because I'm feeling lazy right now :) It was a really enjoyable book, though.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-Myrtle, a talented, funny, obese young woman, is unhappy with herself but feels powerless to change. Frequently shunned and ridiculed, she resorts to self-destructive behavior as a coping mechanism. She shares an apartment the summer between freshman and sophomore years in college with beautiful and sexually active Jada, who pressures her to try more traditional notions of beauty such as makeovers and dieting, which only make Myrtle feel worse. A postcard from her only high school friend, Margie, a practicing Wiccan, brings back painful memories. Taunts of being a lesbian caused the vulnerable teen to end their friendship, but Margie still tries to keep in touch with her. When Myrtle's erotic painting of Jada's boyfriend earns her the label "nympho-psycho-lesbo" from her roommate's friends, she is spurred to action. These hurtful words inspire her to paint her strongest piece yet, a self-portrait as a blue goddess in the form of the ancient stone figure, Venus of Willendorf. The artwork is purchased to hang in the Department of Women's Studies, and Myrtle takes tentative steps to reestablish her friendship with Margie. This powerful first novel is well written and thought-provoking. Teens will appreciate Myrtle's self-deprecating humor and cheer for her as she begins to realize her true strengths and like herself as she is.
Lord of the Rings
Kiki's Delivery Service
Woman on Top

Would you consider the Matrix a pagan movie?

I have "My Neighbor Totoro" on my to-watch list and it sounds like it will be great!

I never saw Mists of Avalon because I enjoyed the book so much and didn't think the movie would do it justice. For the same reason, I never watched Chronicles of Narnia. Even though CS Lewis was Christian, I think they'd have to count as pagan.

Hey guys, I just wrote a preliminary review of JB Russell's recent "up-date" (if one may call it that) of his 1980 text, "A History Of Witchcraft" over at my Blog if anyone would like to read it: http://Blog.MySpace.Com/MacMorrighan (it's the most recent Blog entry on the page).

These films are not specifically about Litha, but they contain elements that remind me of some of the keys and themes of Litha or the Summer Solstice. I'll start with a list of keys and themes I like to use this time of year, your mileage may vary. Different traditons and paths will use different keys and themes, so it's up to the individiual to decide. But these definitely get me in a Litha mood:

Litha Energies and Keys, Empowerment, Pregnancy , Nurturing and flourishing, Solar fire, Courage, Focus and confidence, Work , Individuality Brotherhood, fatherhood, marriage, committment

Ideas for Winter Solstice themed movies?

Particularly movies suitable for children. Our friend is organizing a family Yule sleepover this Friday and she is looking for ideas for movies to show.

I know there is an episode of the Big Comfy Couch (public television program), but not how to get a copy in time.

Any films with fairies and winter? Winter folktales made into movies?

They don't need to be instructional, just fun and somewhat thematic.

BIBLICAL use of MAGIC-MUSHROOMS.

MANNA AMBROSIA/SOMA/TEONANACATL
Hell-Low from Heaven-High; I am author/publisher of "MANNA" the book documenting the
BIBLICAL use of MAGIC-MUSHROOMS.
“Manna” Explores the evidence that Christ was the leader of a Pagan Cult teaching a revival/renaissance of an ancient mushroom ritual learned in Egypt by Moses and Christ, a mushroom religion known also to the Maya of ancient Mesoamerica, and around the world. The Manna-Book asks if this knowledge was kept secret by an elite caste of priests within the Kabalistic Jewish Rabbis until such a time as Christ came and taught it to the masses.

Exodus 16:14-24 indicates that MANNA was inevitably a MUSHROOM.
It was a small round thing in the morning dew, it bred larva, and would melt to mush if not dried. KING JAMES VERSION.
All mushroom pickers know that fly’s eggs cause larvae/worms in mushrooms. The one food most notorious for being full of worms.

Daniel 5:3-5 with Exodus 16:32 and Hebrews 9:4
indicates that the mushroom was a DRUG. After sacking the temple in Jerusalem and stealing the Ark-of-the-Covenant, the King of Babylon and his table drank from the golden cup containing the holy “MANNA” they had visions within the hour….. Psilocybin takes 30-40 minutes to induce visions.

Hebrews 9:4 makes it clear that MANNA was the most holy thing to Israelites, kept in A POT OF GOLD in the ARK OF THE COVENANT, in the MOST HOLY OF HOLYS. So sacred is the Manna that only the High Priest has access to it and only on one day of the year (Yom Kippur), which comes 3 days before the harvest moon (Hallows Eve).

Psalm 78:24-25 calls MANNA FOOD OF ANGELS, just as MAYAN/INCA PRIESTS from Meso-America called it TEONANACATL FOOD OF THE GODS.
MANNA is an Egyptian word, not Hebrew or Aramaic, meaning;
The BREAD OF GOD. This is what Moses called it in Exodus 16:15.
“Bread Of God” means “FOOD OF GOD”, which is the same meaning of TEONANACATL (Mayan), and AMBROSIA (Greek), and SOMA (Hindu) a word for mushroom tea, all these words mean “Spiritual Food”.
Coca and Tobacco Leaves found in Pharaohs tombs suggest it was ancestors of Mayan/Inca Priests who brought MUSHROOMS to Egypt.

John 2:6-9 indicates that Jesus made water into wine by boiling mushrooms (Mushroom-Tea), the waterpots were made of stone, not clay, (stone pots were used for cooking, clay pots used for storing water). These pots already contained 2-3 firkins of a substance before the pots were filled with water.
A “Firkin” is an Old-English measurement meaning a fourth part. Half to three-quarters of fresh mushrooms with water makes a potent tea. Tea is the safest way to consume field mushrooms, killing dangerous bacteria like E. Coli. In the Atharva Veda, the Hindus called this Tea SOMA. Greeks called mushroom jelly AMBROSIA.
Those who drank the water made into wine said it was the most potent intoxicant (St. John 2:10). The Bible tells us that Jesus making water into wine was the “beginning of miracles” … in other words no one saw any miracles until drinking the wine made from water. (St. John 2:11).

“MANA” is an EGYPTIAN WORD, not HEBREW or ARAMAIC, Meaning; “The BREAD OF GOD”. Moses, Christ, and Joseph, The favorite son of Israel, were all educated in Egypt. Solomon married Pharaoh’s daughter, and Abraham found his God at a place called SHECHEM (Sekhem), which is another Egyptian word for MANNA. TEONANACATL [Maya] = SOMA [Hindu] = AMBROSIA / BROMA-THEON [Greek] = MANNA [Egyptian/Hindu] It can be no coincidence that the MAYAN, EGYPTIAN, GREEK, HINDU, and ISRAELITE words for the mushroom all mean exactly the same thing: “THE BREAD OF GOD”.

MANNA was round, was found on the ground in the dew, would melt to mush if not dried or collected on time, and would breed larvae. All unique characteristics of mushrooms. When dried it was like “WAFERS OF BREAD” and it’s color was like “CORIANDER SEED”, the consistency and color of dried mushrooms, as described in Exodus Ch. 16.
Other psychedelics used in the Bible include, of course, Cannabis, Mandrake and others. This book focuses on Mushrooms: “The Global Sacrament”.
Be advised that the author does not advocate the non-ritual use of mushrooms or in any way place their importance above that of love, “Seek first the kingdom of love and all other things shall be added to you” [Christ].

3D Instant messenger

Greetings!
I'm PdxDruid. I want to invite you all to a really awesome 3D chat
messenger. I have alot of Pagan friends there & been drawing many
from other areas on the Net to there. I'm hoping to create a really
strong Pagan presence there. When you join through my link you will
automatically be added to my Buddy list. This will help you find other
Pagans here as almost every single person in my Buddy list is Pagan of one
flavor or another. Heres a run down of how to earn credits here to buy stuff.
When you join they start you off with a 1,000 credits (Credits is our virtual currency).
The main ways to earn credits is to invite folks. When someone first accepts
a invite from you, you earn 500 credits then another 500 credits when they have their
first chat. They give you credit when they hit their 5th chat and others too
but I haven't kept up on how many. LOL Anyway if they buy their name ($7.95)
you get 2,500 credits. NOTE: You don't need to buy your name if you don't want to.
If you don't then you just end up stuck with the word Guest in front of your name.
Alot of folks have guest in front of their name & been here since the beginning.
Also Guest have little ads on there homepage. No biggy. The benefits of buying
your name is it drops the Guest from name, drops the ads from your homepage.
Allows you to download the Developer program & become a
Developer and design & sell clothes & other stuff in the catalog and
a few other things I haven't really learned yet. But mainly unless you
want to be a Developer you don't need to buy your name unless you don't
like Guest in front of your name. One of my friends I invited husband
bought her the full adult access pass & I got 10,000 credits. Adult
Access allows you to buy adult mature stuff like nudity skins and stuff.
So unless you like doing rituals online Skyclad or (LOL) a real flirt
you don't need it. LOL You can buy credits but unless you are loaded
why bother? You can earn plenty just by inviting folks and its a great
way to make friends as well. Speaking of Rituals online. No one is
doing this yet here & one of my good friends is a Developer & I'm
learning to be a Developer. Me & her are working on creating ritual
scenes/themes so folks can do ritual online. Great for those who are
in secluded places or don't have other Pagans in their area to work
with and like to even if it is online, experience ritual with others.
I have a Stonehenge Theme that has a Ritual/council like lodge & hold
little workshop discussions within it. Its a great little lodge to do
Druidic 101 or Wicca 101 classes in also. I also have a Redwoods Theme
and I just did a cyber handfasting in it for 2 and that was kinda cool.
Their Avatars were all dressed up for it & mine wore its celtic robe
and deer antlers on his head (This avatar is temporarly down and I'm
using my PdxDruid one). LOL There are alot of cool Pagan themes
already but they are mainly Pagan social themes. Like the Wiccan
Retreat Cafe & the Goddess Cabin. 2 of my favorite. The first time I
chat with you its in the Cafe. The Cafe can seat like 12 people so its
kinda cool though its still in Beta and can usually only get 3 avatars
to appear in it though I did have up to 7 Avatars in there once. They
are busy working out the kinks though and many I have invited love it
enough they willing to deal with the little quirks. LOL Anyway when
you join and I'm on I spend my first chat with you teaching you how
to control your Avatar and to get to know you then set you loose to
have fun and explore. If I'm not online when you join just click Chat
now & someone will pop up and help you. If you get a newbie learn what
you can then say thank you and try Chat now again till you get someone
whose gotten good at it.
You can also click my homepage in your Buddy list & there you will
fine my buddy list and it will show you who is online (this is great
if you perfer to have a fellow Pagan help you rather than a random
person in the Chat now mode). Click their pict then it will take you
to their page. You can leave a message (If its a question make them
private so their page don't get flooded with questions) or click there
homepage pict & it will launch a chat with them. Let them know I
invited you & they will help you learn how to use your Avatar. Once
you learn to use your Avatar start inviting your Pagan Friends and
earn shopping credits & have fun. Hope to see you there! Below is the

Celebrating the Sabbats in film

When I was young, pre-Pagan, Christmas wasn't Christmas until I had seen Miracle on 32nd Street, heard certain songs, ate certain foods, did certain things, etc. etc.

Now, today, I enjoy having special movies, songs, activities, for each of the Sabbats. Sort of "getting into the spirit" of each Sabbat.

These movies don't have to be overtly Pagan. Not one character has to be Pagan. It doesn't have to be strictly about a Pagan event. And if the movie does have Pagans in it, but they are not cast in a more positive light, such as in "The Wickerman," that doesn't matter to me, because it's the keys and themes of the season I am looking for.

Basically I have certain keys, themes, ideas, or energies that correspond to each of the Sabbats. Either I will be thinking about those keys and be reminded of a movie, or I'll be watching a move and it will remind me of a key or theme of a Sabbat.

For example, for Mabon, I like "Mr. Holland's Opus," because two keys of Mabon, (in my book) are community and completion, and I believe that movie expresses those two themes.

I have a friend who likes the movie, "Bootmen" for Mabon, because when she thinks of this Sabbat, she thinks of men's mysteries.

(I'm not 100% sure I place men's mysteries at Mabon, but that's the beauty of Paganism, I don't have to.)

Anyway, I have at least one movie for each of the Sabbats, and for some Sabbats, entire lists.

If anyone would be interested in talking about Sabbat correspondances and movies to get in the spirt, I would be too.

Has anyone seen "Skeleton Key" with Kate Hudson. Very different role for her. It is about Houdou. Very interesting twists. Would love to know what others thought of it also.

The Craft...ever notice?

Have you ever noticed that The Craft makes a lot more sense in French? I think it's a French movie trapped in an English body. Oodly enough, the movie was a hit in France....
