favorites?

Some of my favorite pagan movies:
Wicker Man
Excaliber (old)
Sword in the Stone (old Disney animated)
Lord of the Rings
Kiki's Delivery Service
Woman on Top

Would you consider the Matrix a pagan movie?

I have "My Neighbor Totoro" on my to-watch list and it sounds like it will be great!

I never saw Mists of Avalon because I enjoyed the book so much and didn't think the movie would do it justice. For the same reason, I never watched Chronicles of Narnia. Even though CS Lewis was Christian, I think they'd have to count as pagan.

Interestingly, J.R.R. Tolkein was a very devout Catholic, and there are books out there discussing the Catholiscism in The Lord of the Rings.

I certainly like Wicker Man, though many Pagans object to it because of the human/animal sacrifice in it.

If you haven't seen it, by all means see "The Firebird" in Fantasia 2000. It is VERY Pagan and an incredible piece of animation. It would have to rank as my favorite bit of Paganism on film.

Cynthia check out the TNT version of Mists of Avalon. Not bad. I loved the book more though (always like the books better). I think it is because my imagination is better than what movies can pull off.

I love Excaliber (old) too but I really liked the newest version "King Arthur" with Clive Owen. Guinevere (played by Keira Knightley) was a kickbutt pagan woman (and an archer) not a whiny, cheating or conniving woman. Also, it is inspired on archaelogical findings and historical Samations warriors. I think it is my favorite Pagan movie of all times.

Other pagan movies/books I liked would be "Practical Magic" (fun movie with great music), "Wickerman", and "The Iliad". Troy had some great pagan moments, too. Anne Bishop (Tir Alain trilogy) and Kate Forsyth (Witches of Eileanen) books are among my favs.

Ya Ya Sisterhood has some interesting pagan undertones even though it was not intentionally portrayed that way. Or was it?

Re: favorites? (hayao miyazaki is wonderful)

    Hi,
I would like to recommend and add two more hayao miyazaki film's, that I always let other pagans know about.
(I also love Kiki's Delivery service, it's a charming story)

My favorite, Spirited Away, just a film every pagan should be checking out.
and Princess Mononoke, which is about Nature and the coming of Industrialism and the struggle between Nature and Man...both may not be for very young children because of some of the images but parents can certainly veiw it first to make that choice. But other then that ..all ages could watch this though for the younger set some of the subtle messages may be overlooked by them.

Spirited Away is the first movie I try to turn people on too if they have never seen hayao miyazaki films before.

I did see Howl's moving castle and it was also very good.

I am a big fan of his films but the two mentioned above are in particular wonderful films for pagans to see.

Generally, if I liked the book I won't see the movie for that exact reason, Becca; they just can't match my imagination. That goes for Mists of Avalon and Chronicles of Narnia. Willow, I loved Spirited Away! I forgot about that one. I'd like to see My Neighbor Totoro, but it's not available on Netflix yet.

isn't that just a wonderful film. I have a lot of his films on dvd and vhs before I had a dvd player so I have Totoro.....you can find some really inexpensive dvds and vhs's of his movies on ebay (not rips, but the real thing-r1 us releases, I purchased some of the vhs's from there as well as a couple of dvds).
if you haven't seen princess mononoke but saw spirited away then I can't recommend it enough.

did anyone see Howl's moving castle? I took a friend who has never seen any H.M films, she knows I love anime so she wasn't sure what to expect though I explained to her it's not what you may think......anyway.....she came out loving it and couldn't stop talking about it and I believe she went to see it one or two more times. it was so fun to turn her on to H.M films...you don't have to be into anime or animation to really appreciate his story telling and artwork.
